Overview:

The entire downstairs of the Essie Inman house is Unit A - the Reedy River Residence. It is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with three entryways - a back entrance to the parking lot, and a front entrance and a side entrance which both access the large wrap-around porch. The unit features high ceilings, numerous windows, and several historic features original to the house in 1905.

Virtual Tour: Please see the pictures below for a room-by-room virtual walk-through of the unit starting in the front living room/entryway.

Living Room

Built-in Shelves

Entering the apartment from the front door opens to a grand, oversized living room with a wider case opening to a large dining room. Some of the historic features in the living room include the original built-ins that frame the entryway to the Front Bedroom, which was probably originally a parlor. Essie Inman was a judge and a judge in 1905 would have needed a collection of books, which might have originally resided on the built-ins. Additionally, there is an original fireplace (deactivated for safety reasons) that adds charm and character to the room. In 1905, there was no central air or heating. To heat the house, wood-burning fireplaces were used to heat different rooms individually. Finally, the floors look gorgeous, but they are not perfectly flat! The floors in the living room show the character and imperfections of a historic house.

Front Bedroom

There is a front bedroom off of the living room with matching closets, and four large windows to allow ample light and breeze into the room. One of the original fireplaces, for heating what was probably originally the parlor, reminds you of the history of the house.

Large Hall (flex space)

From the living room is a large hallway that leads to the other bedroom and one of the full bathrooms. The hallway itself is so large that it could be used as a flex space. Some recommendations for how to use the flex space include a breakfast/coffee bar, a location for a drink station, a sitting area or reading nook, or even a personal yoga studio. How would you use the flex space for your needs? There are two modern feature light fixtures to dress up the space and encourage you to use it for your own needs. And, there is a compass rose inlay in the floor that points north. I would love to tell you that it's original to the house, and that the house was owned by a ship-building family... but unfortunately,... it was installed in 2025 to fill a former HVAC vent hole in the floor. But, it adds a unique talking point that will make your friends/guests jealous.

Primary Bedroom

Off the hallway is the primary bedroom with its own entryway to the wraparound porch and its own private bathroom. There are two closets and another original fireplace.

Second Bathroom

The second bathroom includes a new toilet, vanity, mirror, vanity light, fan and light, tub, and tub surround, and fixtures. The exposed brick is original - this area of the house was originally an outdoor patio space under the overhang of the second floor. It was enclosed in the 1970s to be additional indoor finished space.

The refrigerator is located in the "Butler's Pantry", a small room connected to the kitchen, that also includes additional cabinetry and countertop space.

There is a back entryway/"mudroom" off the kitchen with access to the back parking lot. There is a dedicated laundry room in the back corner of the house with a brand new GE Profile all-in-one washer/dryer, and two storage areas, which could be used as a pantry and a coat closet, or for other storage needs.

Front porch

There is a deep front porch to provide outdoor living space on two sides of the house. The broken terracotta tile mosaic floor was more common in the 1940s through 1960s, so it may not be the original porch flooring, but it adds to the history of the changes to the house over time.
